Treatment of Gum Diseases

Gum Health

Gum diseases are among the most common diseases in the mouth. Bleeding while brushing teeth, sensitivity and recessions in the gums are symptoms of gum disease.
The department that deals with gum diseases in dentistry is called periodontology.

There are various factors that cause gingival diseases. We can express them in two groups.

Local factors

• Dental plaques and tartar caused by poor oral hygiene
• Disorderly fillings that cause plaque build-up
• Unsuitable crowns and bridges
• Mouth breathing
• Orthodontic appliances
• Removable dentures

General factors

• Some diseases such as diabetes
• Obesity
• Vitamin deficiencies
• Drugs used
• Stress

Gum diseases are evaluated in two parts as the initial stage and the advanced stage. The initial stage is gum inflammation called gingivitis. At this stage, there is no problem with the bone around the tooth, and it is possible to treat gingivitis with a good level of oral hygiene.
The advanced stage is called periodonticis, and at this stage, inflammation is seen both in the gingiva and in the bone structure around the tooth.

In cases of gingivitis and periodontitis, the first treatment to be applied to patients is detailed dental plaque and tartar cleaning. With this process, harmful factors are removed from the tooth and root surface. Ultrasonic instruments or dental hand tools are used for removal.

With the developing technology, Airflow has been included in dentistry applications.
Airflow is to apply a mixture of tooth cleaner powder and water to the tooth surfaces at a certain pressure.

Advantages of using Airflow;
• Access to all surfaces of the teeth
• A practical application and shortens the treatment time
• No pain or discomfort in patients.

Dental cleaning is completed with the last polishing process. Patients should repeat dental cleaning treatment every 6 months. In the treatment of periodontitis, various surgical procedures are applied according to the amount of bone loss after tooth cleaning.

GUMMY SMILE

The position of the gum and lip is very important for a satisfying aesthetic smile. While smiling occurs, gingival visibility up to 2 mm is considered normal. The non-aesthetic condition in which the gums appear more is called Gummy Smile.

Causes of gummy smile;
• Intense activities of the muscles
• Delayed passive tooth eruptions
• Non-ideal positions of the upper and lower jawbone

Gummy smile treatments;
• Surgical shaping of the gums (Gingivectomy)
• Botulinum toxin (botox) treatment
• Repositioning the lip
• Jaw surgeries

These methods are applied alone or together after clinical examination. After the Gummy Smile treatment is applied, an ideal smile is obtained by applying porcelain coating (crown) or laminate veneer treatment.
